Unique facts about dolphins.

Cocoa Beach Dolphin Tours helps bring guests in search of wildlife, with multiple tour packages offered throughout the Cocoa Beach Thousand Islands, a maze of narrow trails & canals located in the Indian River Lagoon. The Thousand Islands are home to different animals like the manatee, egrets, and bald eagles. However, one species specifically calls the Thousand Island home, the bottle-nosed dolphin.

Bottle-nosed Dolphins are an incredible species that are socially skilled, intelligent, agile, playful, and share many emotional similarities with humans. They are mammals, meaning they need regularly visit the surface to breathe air to survive and travel together in a group known as a pod. A pod can contain anywhere from 2 – 30 dolphins depending on the species and the situation; however, there are occasions when pods gather together to form super pods, which can contain up to a thousand dolphins.

Dolphins lack a sense of smell and rely on their other senses of sight and sound to find food, such as fish, squid, and crustaceans, and have two stomachs: one that stores food, while the other digests food.

Adult female Dolphins are pregnant for up to 16 months,  giving birth to a single baby once every 1 – 6 years. Their “calves” can stick with their Mom for as long as eight years. Dolphins sleep with half of their brains awake and alert to keep them aware of any potential threats or predators that might come through the area. Sleeping with half their brain "asleep" also helps them breathe while they are asleep.

There are 40 different species of dolphins living in the oceans, while there are five species of river dolphins. Using their language, comprised of clicks and whistles, dolphins talk to each other, are self-aware, and can assign specific whistles to each pod member, giving each other unique names.
