Episode 50 Dr. Gioia Massa and Dr. Jamie Foster, two scientists from NASA who have experiments going to the International Space Station.

Join us when we speak with two scientists from NASA who have experiments going to the International Space Station.

Dr. Gioia Massa, a NASA life science project scientist at Kennedy Space Center, works on space crop production for the International Space Station and future exploration endeavors. Massa holds a Ph.D. in Plant Biology, stemmed from her Middle School passion for growing plants in space. Her most recent efforts involve research led by Massa and supported studies of agriculture in microgravity – specifically on the International Space Station. Receiving feedback from current astronauts in space on which crops taste best, Massa will build her knowledge, leading a test of dwarf tomatoes planned for 2022.

Dr. Jamie Foster, a Professor in Microbiology and Cell Science at the University of Florida, maintains a research lab at the Space Life Sciences Lab at Exploration Park in Merritt Island. Foster is a Space Biologist and examines healthy interactions between microbial communities and their surrounding environments. Further improving our understanding of molecular mechanisms that microbes use to adapt and respond to changes in the environment, Foster will lead an upcoming experiment on Space X 22 called UMAMI. The research will examine the effects of spaceflight on the beneficial interactions between a bobtail squid and its symbiotic microbe. Foster’s experiment is set to launch in early June 2021.
