Our May concert is a tribute to women composers. Although many women have composed music, women are largely absent from textbooks and concert programs. The reasons for this are various, but it has been speculated that women composers were deemed less important than men because they typically wrote smaller works, rather than large works such as symphonies for public performances in concert halls. Female composers were barred from the profession for a long time because women were considered unable to control emotion with logic and reason, long considered the masculine attributes needed for composition. It is with pride that we perform this concert as a tribute to women composers.
